When it comes to music videos, there are a few things I really hate:
- Will Smith is involved
- Children who are being over-produced at too early of an age
- Special effects that make it look like animals are actually talking
So you would think, then, that the music video for “Whip my Hair” by Willow Smith – yes, that would be Will Smith’s 10-year-old daughter – would rub me the wrong way, because it has two of the three elements I detest. So why, then, am I watching it every day – and acting it out with my friends?
There’s a lot going on here. I mean, she’s bedazzling her face. Why is this ok? She apparently has such an eye for design that her clothes are custom-made by high-end designers. Also, the video is totally unrealistic because in real life she’d get in trouble for whipping paint across the lunchroom and onto other kids. My school would never have condoned that.
Ultimately, I should really dislike everything about this … but for some reason, I don’t. She kind of totally rocks. Have I lost my mind, or is it ok to think she’s kind of the most bad-ass 4th-grader I can think of? She’s got the potential to have a long, interesting and creative career – that is, if she doesn’t get sidelined by a neck injury at the ripe old age of 11 from whipping her hair back and forth too much.
